Tobacco Packaging Market

The work pressure these days has been increasing rapidly, as the focus on corporate sectors and enhanced productivity is rising. Attributed to this, a growing number of people have started relying on tobacco-based products for relaxing. Nicotine, a psychoactive mood-altering chemical, is present in tobacco, which releases dopamine in the body after reaching to the brain. The process leads to a sense of pleasure and relaxation and aids in relieving stress. Therefore, the number of people consuming cigarettes and other tobacco-related products is rising across the across the globe.

As per the World Health Organization (WHO), about 1.337 billion people, which included 43 million people in the age group of 13–15, were consuming tobacco in 2018 in order to deal with several physical, social, and personal issues, including mental health and peer pressure. Because of this increasing demand for tobacco-based products, the demand for tobacco packaging is increasing rapidly as well. According to a report by P&S Intelligence, the global tobacco packaging market attained a revenue of $19,134.6 million in 2019, and the market is expected to advance at a 3.7% CAGR during the forecast period (2020–2030).

Various types of materials are utilized for tobacco packaging applications, including metals, paper, wood, and plastic. Out of these, paper has been the most popular choice for the packaging of tobacco and is further predicted to be the most in demand in the coming years as well. Paper is used for packing cigarettes that are consumed extensively across the globe. As per the WHO, approximately 6 trillion cigarettes were produced in 2019, which were consumed by 1 billion people. In addition to this, paper and paperboard materials are eco-friendly, which is also a major reason for their increased adoption when it comes to tobacco packaging applications.

Other than this, the demand for plastic materials is also projected to increase considerably in the near future for packing different tobacco-based products, which can primarily be ascribed to the availability of an extensive range of plastic packaging materials/containers in various sizes and shapes. Plastic materials are further low in weight and can be transported easily, owing to which, their demand in the domain is projected to grow. All these materials are used for primary and secondary packaging of tobacco-based products, between which the adoption of secondary packaging has been higher up till now.

This is due to the fact that secondary packaging provides a barrier against different environmental factors to tobacco products, including aroma and moisture dissipation. Furthermore, secondary packaging in different forms, namely corrugated boxes, trays, & cartons, is utilized for holding individual units together during their transportation to point of sale or customers. Geographically, Asia-Pacific is expected to emerge as the largest tobacco packaging market in the coming years, which can be owing to the fact that about one-third of all smokers around the world are present in China, as per the WHO.

In conclusion, the demand for tobacco packaging is growing due to the increasing number of cigarette smokers and rising work-related stress.
